My current PC Specs:

Intel Pentium Dual Core e5400 2.7GHz running at 3.6GHz (OC)
2GB DDR3 1333 Memory
Motherboard MSI G41-M P28
240GB SSD
PSU Aerocool Rave 500 watt 80 plus
Cooler Master Hyper 212x
Monitor AOC 1620Wb 1366x768

So heres the scenario:

currently I'm only playing Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare on 1366x768 with the lowest possible settings and I'm getting like 45fps (example), if I add the 750 ti and change the settings will I:

a. get the same framerates but with better graphics
b. get better graphics but even less frame rate
c. get better framerates and graphics
d. others

Solution

Yea the i5's have different motherboards with different sockets. It would be best to save up for a whole new CPU + Motherboard + Ram combo. The i3-6100 on an LGA 1151 motherboard would be a great choice if you went that route as it is on the same level as most previous i5s.

*EDIT: you say you already have an i5-4460 in hand? Then just get yourself a cheap $50 LGA 1150 motherboard.

But if you don't want to spend that much, do consider a Core 2 Quad, as it would be much better than the Pentium Dual Core for only $15.

And for...

It might help but you won't be able to reap the full benefits of the upgrade because of your CPU. Even with the overclock, there is only so much a dual thread processor can do. Check your CPU usage while playing to get an idea what might be causing the frame drops at the moment.

As far as your question about frame rate, it's kind of invalid. The real question should be "would I get higher FPS with the same settings". If you get higher FPS (beyond what you are happy with), you'll probably turn up the graphics detail anyway. It would depend on what GPU you have at the moment.

You either might need to consider a new CPU and motherboard setup or at least a CPU swap if you're CPU isn't handling your games at this workload. Maybe consider something like a Q8400? It won't be as good as a new setup but might be able to help a bit.

Yes I agree. I was waiting for him to reply before I mentioned the Core 2 Quads, they are only $15 on eBay and his motherboard does support them. Getting a Core 2 Quad plus a GTX 750 Ti (depending on your current GPU) would be highly recommended. You just can't beat getting so much more CPU performance for only $15 without having to upgrade your motherboard.

as for the future cpu upgrade I am currently looking at the i5 4460 and 8GB 1333mhz memory (which I already have in hand thinking that it would work on my current cpu but unfortunately it doesn't)

And for budget-minded gaming GPUs:

GTX 750 Ti (A great choice as long as you aren't paying as much as one of these others cost)
RX 460
GTX 950
GTX 1050 (To Be Announced)

You first need to upgrade your RAM to at least 4GB. 8GB is the recommended minimum for any gaming PC these days but 4GB would be alright for you current setup and the game you want to play. A GTX 750Ti https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=searc... would be a great card to add to your system and will give you a huge boost in both performance and allow you to turn up the graphical quality. You will eventually need to fully upgrade your system but those two upgrades will get you by for a while. Eventually, your CPU and motherboard will need to be upgraded but the rest of the parts could be carried over.

I don't have the i5 4460 on hand but I have the 2x4GB 1333 memory (transcend) which I thought would work on the pentium because the current memory I use is also a 1333mhz 2gb ram from kingston .

If I knew that it would not work, I could have gone with the i5 6500 and ddr4
