Best Low-Budget CPU for 2-D and 3-D

Solution

That is a good question and I think he hints at ~$65 being his overall budget (CPU said 30-40 and the MoBo linked is $32).

If you go with that MoBo, ScreenGems98, then Ecky is right. Finding a CPU for it will be hard outside of EBay or the used market in general, and if you find it new, the value for the whole PC will be less if you spent a couple more dollars on a new computer IMO.

Since you already have the GTX670, then Video card wise you...
Can you define a bit better what you mean by "2D and 3D" things? Are you talking about Photoshop and Maya (for example)? Video Editing? 3D CAD rendering? Schematics plotting?

If that is the case, then you should get a cheap AM3+ board (there's plenty AMD 970 cheap ones) with an FX8300 and 16GB+ of RAM with an nVidia GT7x0 video card. That is a very cheap and capable for CAD machine. If you can't go beyond $100 for the CPU, then your idea is not a bad one just because of price, specially since the APUs do come with a decent GPU for grunt work, but it pains me to say that nVidia has a small edge with CAD workloads; whenever DirectX or OGL is supported, they work better in nVidia low end hardware. At least, that is my impression.

Also, keep in mind FM1 is very low end (focuses in low power APUs), so you might want to go at least to FM2+ so you have an update option in case you require a bit more grunt down the road.

Cheers!

Hi Yuka,

Thank you for the reply. I found a better motherboard "MSI MS-7641 VER 3.0" instead. I already have an nVidia Geforce GT 670 and 8GB RAM, but I need a CPU that could be good for things like video editing, photo editing, and light gaming. I'd prefer that it were a quad-core or similar. The socket is "AM3b".

Thanks

That motherboard doesn't support any CPU made after ~2009, but an old chip off eBay such as a Phenom II x4 would be better than any AM1 CPU, which are basically tablet and cellphone chips and not good for netbooks, much less desktops.

What's your total budget for CPU and motherboard?
