So currently in my house we only have the one router and when want to play games such as CSGO and when i am the only person using the internet or my family are only using webpages I get 40ms ping which is good as I live in AUS. However when someone in my family starts watching YouTube, Netflix or my brother starts playing online games as well my ping will jump to plus 150ms ping which is unplayable for games like CS. I am wondering if I buy a wifi extender and for example put it in my room and had the rest of my family connect to the router directly and I connect to the extender would this help my ping

Solution
Perhaps just semantics, but you do not want an extender, you want an access point. You can use pretty much any router and just set it up as an AP: (1) LAN to LAN connection to main router, (2) turn DHCP off on AP, (3) give the AP a static address in the network range but outside the main router DHCP range. Then just set the radios to different non-overlapping channels for 2.4GHz and whatever you want for 5GHz.

That will give you additional radio bandwidth for other users and leave the other channel solely for your use. It works quite well if you don't have interference from other nearby networks.

A range extender or repeater basically cuts down the bandwidth while, increasing range and latency.

The exception to this is a dual band model, where you reserve one frequency for the connection back to the router.

You don't say what you up/down connection is, but you could be max'ing out the routers performance or the upload which can effect download.
