My PC has a Maximus V gene with a i7 3770k and a gtx 970, with a samsung ssd, its all great, and has served me well for years, however, i would really liek to get the fullest out of my 144 hz 1080p moniter in the newst games still running them at higher quality (high or ultra), should i go for a 1070, or will i see a bottleneck in my old ass cpu and motherboard?

Solution
Your CPU will support a 1070/1080 just fine, and the GPU is always where you will get the most improvement on gaming performance. Having said that, at some point the performance will be hindered by the GPU and monitor refresh rate matching (sometimes, your monitor will pick up the same frame 3 times per cycle, sometimes twice, and sometimes once). That might cause a slight stuttering effect as your FPS goes up and down. Therefore, you might also consider a G-Sync monitor as an upgrade in the future as well.

V-sync is not enough to smooth out problems such as that?
