Hi All,

I am having an issue with my older custom built i7 3820 with an Asus motherboard.

At startup - BIOS - I am getting an overheating error and desktop shuts down.

Even at idle/cold overnight when I turn on the computer and get into BIOS, I notice my CPU temperature is show almost 78C already which doesn't seem right.

I recently replaced all the fans as I was previously getting a lot of fan noise issues.

I also have a Corsair Radiator on the CPU

I forget what model number it is.. it is square and has 2 tubes coming from radiator.

On the radiator itself I have 2 Corsair SP fans, and on top of case I have a Corsair AF fan, all 120.

The fans are all running at startup.

I took off heatsink... I noticed there is still thermal paste on unit.. CPU has a marginal amount.

Is this simply a case of either my Corsair heatsink stopped working, or I need to clean and reinstall thermal paste?

I don't see how the CPU could be upwards of 70C at startup so I hope something else is not going on here.

Solution

Just an advice, if you dont have a concrete reason (heavy overclock, really bad airflow in the case, etc...) i would allways recomend a good air solution over a liquid cooling, you would get equally good temperatures and the failure rate is a lot better.

The liquid coolers have their own place, but the normal user is not their target you only get drawbacks and none of the virtues.

If the CPU fan is still working there are three posibilities, that the thermal paste is degraded (and if you took off the heatsink i would recomend allways to replace the thermal paste) and is not working, that you put wrong the heatsink (too few pressure, wrong placement) or that the sensor is broken and read wrong temperatures).

Thank you both for your responses.

When turning on the PC there is a loud noise... and I think it may be the Corsair cooler just failing.

The CPU itself felt mildly warm at startup, so not sure how the temperature could get up so far.

I ended up just purchasing a replacement Corsair liquid cooler and will see if that does the trick.

Agree after I posted started reading up that the Corsair units fail after a few years... its probably been a little over 3 years for me.

Thank you both for guiding me in the right direction.

unplug all your fans and turn on your computer with your finger on top of the cpu block/pump If there is no vibration then the pump has died and you need to replace the whole unit.

If you can feel a vibration then the pump is working and you need to start looking at other things. Like replacing the thermal paste or blowing out the radiator.

Seems like the liquid cooler has failed.

Felt around and didn't really feel any kind of vibration.

I should get the parts on Wed, and hopefully be back up and running then

Thank you all for the help.
