Hi guys, so my pc hasn't been working. The fans start spinning for a second and then then the pc shuts down. I tried everything and I thought I'd try booting the pc without the cpu in the motherboard and then it stayed booted.. The thing is where the little slot where the cpu is seated (where the little pins are) it looks like a pin in missing or something in the bottom left hand corner. So do you think the motherboard is faulty or the cpu?

Thanks loads guys.

Motherboard: msi h81m-e33
Cpu: i5

Hello!

Most likely your motherboard is fried unfortunately, so because of this if the motherboard is still under warranty, I would RMA it so that you can get another one, otherwise you'll need to replace your motherboard :(

Missing pins on a motherboard will not allow it to function properly.

I see a pin 5 over and 5 up that looks askew.
Try to nudge it back with a needle into a proper position and see if that fixes things.
You need to be very careful when dropping the cpu into the slot.
If you smoosh it around, you will mess up the pins.

It is doubtful that your cpu is damaged, but you may need a new motherboard.
Vendors explicitly exclude pin damage from their RMA warranty.

UPDATE GUYS:

So I tried a brand new motherboard and the exact same thing happened. With the cpu slotted into the mobo the fans start for a second and then stop. Without the cpu slotted the pc starts as it should and stays booted.

So I guess its obviously the cpu right? It must be faulty. It seems I have my answer.

Thank you loads guys for all of your help.

That's a possibility, worth a shot.

Did your PC ever act normally? there might have been signs of a faulty PSU before absolute failure like now almost.

Also just want to say Dragos Manea, nice profile picture of Ichigo Kurosaki :D

UPDATE NO.2:

So I tried it with a brand new psu and the exact same thing happens. So do you guys think it is the cpu?

Yeah it did once upon a time and then I changed the case and it all messaed up from there. Thanks for all of your efforts guys.

If you all think i should buy a new cpu then thats what i'll do. Thank you.

In this case I have a feeling that getting a new CPU will be the best thing to do...obviously :)

Which i5 do you have? You may just need to update the Bios. Also, be sure to reset the CMOS by unplugging the PSU, removing the CMOS battery, and then holding the case power button for a minute or two. If this isn't the cause, go through the steps in the link below to be certain you haven't overlooked something. CPU failure is quite uncommon and usually the result of poor overclocking.

If you look at the picture, he had a bent pin on the CPU socket and has since replaced the mobo.

TY, my favorit anime series.
OP only thing left is the cpu, next time be carefull with the components and especially be careful of static charge.

I dont think it is necessary to ground yourself but at least touch a grounded metal before doing anything to discharge yourself.
