Is an upgrade to a 1060/480 or even 1070 worth it?

The current GPU is an r9 280x and its age is starting to show quite a lot by now...
So I was wondering if it worth the upgrade to a 1060 or even a 1070 and I would of thought that the prices would have settled by now, but thats obviously false considering that the 1070 is £400+, which i still i find a bit ridiculous in my opinion.

Just switched from R9 290X to 1070 as i've also moved to 1440p from 1080p so the extra horse power and VRAM from 4gb to 8gb has certainly helped. The price of the 1070 is certainly high though considering. I was aiming to go sli but just couldn't justify another £400 on top. So will be waiting until prices actually drop properly before getting my second 1070

What games do you play? And at what resolution? Also what CPU do you have? If you play the latest triple AAA games, have a 1080p 60hz monitor and don't plan on upgrading it I would say the 1060 or even an RX 480 makes the most sense when considering price to performance. If you are a serious gamer with either a high refresh rate 1080p or 1440p monitor and want over 60fps max settings in most games a 1070 might be for you. It depends on what you want.

This really depends on what kind of performance you expect your system to give you. A lot of this comes into play with your resolution. Are you expecting 4k, 2k, or 1080p (Full HD) resolution. For 2k and up gaming I would recommend the GTX 1070. Its a solid card and new gen so you will get some time out of your investment before it ages and is past up by newer generation models.

That being said, it sounds like your running a budget system so assuming your not running 2k+ resolutions go with a GTX 1060 in my opinion. Below are links to some data comparisons. Basically 1060 vs 480 is about even but 1060 comes out $50-60 cheaper. Also, you will notice your current card VS 1060 which doubles your FPS on games listed in comparisons.

The RX 480 are basically GTX970-RX 290/390/X at $250 range. The GTX1060 is closer to GTX980 level.

The rule of thumb are, worthy upgrades are at least two tier higher. None of those cards are, in your case.

GTX1070 definitely an overkill at 1080p. But considering, this is the GPU you should look for. As ridiculous as the price right now, it is your ideal GPU to have.

Ah I see yea that seems to be the general gist for what the majority think. Yea I guess I should consider either a 1060 or 480, but now this brings up a question for which one I should get because from what I see on reviews and all that guff, the 480 is a better future proof with vulkan, which the 1060 runs older games better.

Also, anyone got any idea how long it would take for prices to settle?

The RX 480 performance is odd. At DX11 on average, it behave a bit worse than GTX970 or R9 390/290/X. But on DX12 and Vulkan it pushes beyond GTX980 at times, and consistently stay ahead of GTX970.

GTX 1060 on the other hand, had a consistent numbers all round at its expected performance. Past the GTX970 but never quite reach 980.

You have to also consider the driver. If history are to repeat itself, RX 480 will only get better. This is not to say the 1060 would not, that is until the next arch sets in.
That said, if driver the main argument, I'd also argue that nVidia's feature with ShadowPlay among other things, are superior than AMD has to offer yet. Very useful stuff for content creator on Youtube.
So it is not limited to just raw performance race anymore. But also versatility and user's main driver for purchase.

Prices should have settled by now.Its been months the cards are out.Rx 480 is equal to stock 980 performance.People say rx 480 is equal to 970 performance but its not true.Rx 480 is a great card it is equal to overclocked version of 970 which is equal to stock 980.The card beats both 1060 and 980 in dx12 and vulkan games. The 1060 beats rx 480 in dx11 and openGl games.1060 is sometime equal to the 980 and the rest of the time != 980 in performance. If you are 1080p gamer look no more ahead then the rx480 or the 1060 as both will suffice. Also word of advice if you planning to do SLI then 1060 does not have sli ports but rx480 comes with cross fire and should equal or greater to 1070 in performance at the same price.
