Hi,

[To start off with, I did discourage my friend from getting a PC from eBay, but in the end, he could end up with a working PC or could've learned a lesson]

Recently, a friend of mine purchased their first gaming PC from eBay (pre-owned), due to it being a low price for a decent machine. The specs are:

CPU: i7 3930K (3.8 GHz, 6 cores) (Not overclocked)
CPU COOLER: Corsair Hydro H100i
GPU: NVIDIA Geforce GTX 690 (2GB) (Not overclocked)
RAM: 16GB DDR3 Corsair Vengeance (2x8) (Not overclocked)
MOTHERBOARD: Motherboard is ASUS branded, but no sure of the model. (Default BIOS)
PSU: 850w Corsair PSU
Storage: 120GB Corsair Force SSD
2TB WD Black (OS Drive)
OS: Windows 10 Professional

*The OS came installed on the 2TB drive rather than the SSD for some reason, but I've told my friend about this, and he hopes to change it soon.*

Initially, my friend began downloading Rainbow Six: Siege and went away from his PC for a while, waiting for it to complete. He came back a few hours later to find that the PC had completely shut down, only to realize that the power cable was only half-way plugged in. He fully plugged in the power cable, and rebooted Windows, recommencing the download. This time, while waiting near his PC, it completely turned off again. He powered it on again, but this time, it would only stay on for around 15 seconds, and then it would turn off. He left the PC for a few hours and came back to it, and then it would boot into Windows fine.

In the BIOS, the temperature of the CPU was 24C and the motherboard about 26C, and after booting into Windows, CPU temp on average was about 29C and the GPU temp was about 32C. After leaving the computer for just a few minutes, it would once again turn off, no matter if he was playing a game or not.

I am going to get him to reinstall his OS, run a memtest, check event viewer and check his motherboard connectors are fully plugged in, but does anybody have any other ideas that he can try?

I would've waited and made this post when I could actually contact my friend, but I thought it would be easier to gather a few ideas and give him advice whenever I can, rather than waiting.

Thank you.

*UPDATE: Turns out that my friend found out his PSU fan wasn't spinning, so the PSU was overheating.*
