Hello,

I have brighthouse for my internet and the modem they gave me to use kept dropping out and they are charging me $10 a month for it. I want to purchase my own modem, router or combo. I'd like to stay around $200 if possible. What would be the best option for future use as well?

Thank you

Solution
A separate modem, from the list of approved modems that Brighthouse provides and a standalone router is the most future proof option. If you change providers then you either get a new modem or get an ethernet cable as input to your existing router.

AC1200 or AC1900 routers provide the best value.

The "Router Ranker" over at SmallNetBuilder -- http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/tools/rankers/router/view can give you good comparisons.

Thank you so much for your reply.

With the AC1900 class router If I have a modem that can handle over 300mbs how much will the wifi download speed be? I have multiple devices on 3 different floors of my house. I did purchase a range extender a couple of weeks ago, but I'm not sure if it is worth keeping it if I'm getting a better router. I would rather put my money in a new modem and router.

Thanks again.

WIFI speeds are determined by both the router and the WIFI client. You could get up to 200Mbit using the 2.4Ghz band if your client hardware supported N450. You could get your more than 200 with an AC 5Ghz connection. But that would be in the same room as the router.

I did look at brighthouse and the netgear CM600 is listed.

Thanks again for your help. I will purchase these two and see how it works.

I don't recommend combo router/modem units. They can become door stops if you change ISP. A discrete modem and router allows you flexibility to replace either half when technology warrants.

I don't have any strong feeling for waiting. Your ISP may take a long time to qualify new technology. Get what is on the approved list.

Thanks again for all your help. I'm going with the modem and router that I listed before that you said were good.
