Audio problems and static electricity

I have been battling this issue for months and thought it was time to ask someone who hopefully knows better. This is a weird and a hard-to-explain problem, but thanks to anyone who reads this.

The problem is that my microphone is really quiet, I have to basically yell for it to even recognize my voice. I have tried every solution and trick I have found from this forum/google/youtube, but nothing has worked (including everything with the Realtek audio drivers etc). The microphone levels are all the way up, but here the problem gets more weird: if I try to raise the microphone boost to +30dB (maximum), the microphone freaks out (a loud distortion noise comes from the headset) and starts a disconnect/connect -loop and does not work at all. Before I moved to this apartment the same mic worked perfectly even with maximum boost and still works on my wife's laptop. I have also tried another headset and the same problem exists, though that microphone already freaks at +20dB boost.

I don't know if I should blame myself, the cat or this house. The house does not have grounded sockets (I know, not ideal) but another thing is weird: sometimes when the cat touches my computer desks steel legs, I hear loud popping noises from my headphones?! My desk is from Ikea, a model named Bekant. The table is wooden, but the legs are steel, how could the static electricity from my cat cause that kind of problems and somehow find its way from the table legs to my computer?

So, I'm ready to take any guesses and help. Is the root cause of this problem the not-grounded sockets and if that is the case, have I already damaged my components? Especially the motherboard because that is where the sound comes from. But my audio still works perfectly so I'm confused... Really confused! If someone finds a solution for this, I'll give you a bag of virtual cookies.

My setup is:
Asus Z97 PRO (Wi-Fi AC)
Intel I7-4790
Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR3 16GB 1600MHz
Asus GTX 780 DirectCU II
Operating system is Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
1Tb Samsung SSD
120gb Kingston SSD
The case is Phanteks Enthoo Primo

It almost sounds like a ground loop... We usually only see that in Car and Home audio, but most PCs have a proper grounding circuit.

You're probably enough to ground a PC just a little bit. As in, your heavy liquid body.

Touch the case, if its metal just touching the case should work, but for best results try touching your PCIe bracket. That metal bracket is plugged directly into the motherboard and should provide good results.

Does it work OK when you're touching the bracket? Does the sound change at all?

It sounds like a ground loop... but then again if it were i'd anticipate your outputs would have similar issues, not just the mic...

Thanks for the quick reply!

Tried touching the case everywhere possible, but that fix the problem unfortunately. It seemed to work better now though, I don't know why. Yes, the horrible sounding distortion came again when I boosted the mic, but it stopped when I tapped the microphone firmly. If I try to say something, the strange sound continues... Does not matter if I am touching the case or not.

One thing I forgot to mention in the first message was the fact, that when my cat touches the table leg and I hear the popping sound in my headphones, my old mouse also disconnected at the same time. I had to unplug it and plug it back for it to work again. This problem does not exist with my new mouse. The old one was Roccat Kone XTD and the new mouse is Logitech G502.
