A question about crossfire RX480

Hey,

I'm thinking about buying 2 of those 480's , and my question is: if I get one with 8gb vram and another 4 gb vram, how will that work? As far as I know, the vram doesn't stack so I thought maybe I'd have dual 480 with 8gb vram for cheaper.

Thanks

It doesn't stack in DX 12 either, nor vulkan. Only in DX12 multi-gpu of which there is only 1 game. and multi-gpu is NOT crossfire.

Isn't crossfire like SLI but then for AMD? Thanks for the answers by the way.

Yes. But unlike the their nvidia counterpart they no longer require a physical bridge between the two cards and now run entirely through the PCI slots

I've just realised something which I think forces me to buy 1070,

My PSU is 650w, a good 80 plus gold one, but still 650w. I also have an i7 6700k, with that being overclocked I hardly can imagine 650w being enough. What do you think about that?

same here i'm running a 6700k setup with a 1070 and much prefer it over my r9 290Xs in Xfire that I used to have. Performs a lot better at 1440p too due to the additional VRAM. System runs a lot cooler for it too in all honesty. So yes, I would far more recommend the 1070. both in terms of performance and power consumption :)

The problem is my budget. I currently can afford something around 350 euros and later I can add on top of that. Right now, I can only use my hd graphics 530 (from i7) which sucks a lot.

And I'm guessing newer games must have crossfire support, if not, single 480 should handle 50+ fps in 1080p (that will later be 1440p).

So, I'm still not sure if 650w is enough. Otherwise I'll just keep playing dark souls over and over again until I can get 200 more euros.

if you are able to hold out. wait and save for the 1070. if not get the 480 but make sure you go for the 8gb version as running at ultra settings at 1440p on shadow of mordor (my main game atm) its using about 7gb of the 8gb total VRAM. @Rouge Leader may be able to shed more light on this than I can but that would certainly be my preference anyway
