I Doubt it would work, as you say, the power supply does not have 20+4, but is a solid 24.
(thanks JohnnyGuru review)

Your motherboard 20 pin connector usually has thicker edges around the side than the distance inbetween the pins, so I would say that it won't work.

If you could find some way to force it on, or cut the extra 4 off, it would work.
But it's too much effort.

An older motherboard that takes a 20 pin only, won't require a huge amount of power, rather save some money and buy a 400-450w power supply that has 20+4.

The reason I'm looking at this is in part because my current 500W is showing signs of insufficient power (and in part because I'm deliberately buying it for the increased power efficiency from Bronze > Platinum).

So everyone agrees it won't work as is but I see a number of 20 pin male 24 pin female atx adapters which would let it work?
