Dear experts,

My config is:
i5 4460
Gigabyte GA-b85m-d3h
4x4GB Kingston DDR3 1600
GTX 970 Asus Strix
Crucial MX200 240GB + Plextor M5Pro 128GB

Recently I have opportunity to exchange my 21 months old GTX 970 to a brand new Gigabyte GTX1060 3GB with almost no additional cost (7$).

I've checked and eventough the 1060 has worse numbers than GTX 970 (less shader units, ROP's, TAU's, 0,5GB VRAM less) it has better performance in games - it was quite surprising for me.
What's more - for my Asus 970 there is only 15 months of warranty left and for Gigabyte they are giving 36 months of full warranty.
Everything above suggests that it would be a good step, but maybe am I missing something?

I play mostly RPG games (Witcher, Fallout, Dragon AGe, XCOM) at 1080p.

The Gigabyte card is:

What would you say - is the exchange worth going for? I will be very grateful for pieces of advice as I have to take decision quick (until tomorrow morning).

Solution
Go for the exchange. nVidia notoriously stop supporting (i.e. optimising) older hardware in their driver updates. The gap between the GTX970 and GTX1060 will only get larger over subsequent driver updates.
i have a gtx970 if offered that deal i would take it definitely

edited--yes its the 3gb 1060 not 6gb but at 1080p that shouldnt matter

newer architecture, more power efficient, and a bit better in games and a full 3 warranty

so unless i am missing something it seems like a really good deal

yes u r right that gtx 1060 3gb is faster than 970.Today, most of the games at 1080p ultra settings requires 3gb or little bit more than that. But, in coming years, as graphics are becoming more advanced, they may climb to 4gb gpu usage or can be more than that..
So, if you want to play everything to ultra settings u should go for 970 4gb.
But, if u don't mind those ultra settings and u can compromise to medium or high(not ultra) settings, then 1060 3gb can serve to you very well..

but, even 1060 3gb is not future proof, u should get 1060 6gb of msi (msi gtx 1060 6gb oc version).

i suggest u buy 6gb version of 1060

and theres always the notorious 3.5gb not 4gb of full speed vram with the 970 thing so sort of only dropping 0.5gb of vram

i dont think the 3gb vram will be a problem at 1080p

yes if they would give you the 6gb version lol--but that poster isnt reading your post right you are swapping not buying a new card

For the tiny cost it looks like an OK deal, but just a few points:
WHO is offering this exchange?
WHY are they being to generous?
Do you know or trust them?
Yep, I'm being a bit paranoid here, but you don't mention who is being so generous and this kind of thing always triggers an alarm along with the old saying: If it looks to good to be true, it almost certainly is.

good question actually--i just assumed as they said new with full warranty it was a genuine retailer

I got the good offer on the aftermarket for my GTX970, and then I found good offer for GTX1060 in one of the shops in my country. This is not one to one exchange but selling one, and buying other with arround 7$ change

Yes I completely agree with you. 6 GB version is probably better, So do 1070 and 1080. But there is no budget for that. And this exchange I can afford so that's why I raised this issue.

I would like to thank you all for your answers. I decided to go for this GTX 1060. Maybe there will be not very big difference in performance, but longer guarantee + better energy management convinced me to do so.
I just hope that all those tests and benchmarks showing superiority of GTX 1060 (even 3GB version) over GTX970 are not VW like and they are showing real - no imaginary - performance ;)
