Hello all

I recently bought an msi gtx 1070 (was in major need of an upgrade) and i think i am starting to see a bottleneck. I have an i5 4430 as well as 16gb ddr3 ram and i play on a 1440p 27 inch monitor. After seeing the system requirements for battlefield 1, i am really worried that i cant play the game very well even with a gtx 1070. My question is do you think i will have a good experience on battlefield 1? if not then could you recomend a decent processor upgrade. now bear in mind i spent most my money on the 1070 so only have about £400 for a new processor, motherboard and ram. cheers

System Specs:
i5 4430@3.0ghz
16gb ddr3 ram
msi armour gtx 1070
1440p 144hz monitor
512gb sandisk ssd

Personally i'd pony up for the 4790k just so i know it'll last me as long as possible. A 20% performance increase is very meaningful in the long run.

I wouldn't upgrade until you've tried the game personally, but if you want to see if you can find a devil's canyon i7 4790K for your existing board as that's still one of the faster cpu's available. Or maybe the i5 4690K if the i7 is too pricey. The skylake 6 series CPU's are only a little faster overall.

thanks for such a quick response. so my motherboard is a gigabyte h81-hd3 so no overclocking then. I have heard that playing at 1440p limits the bottleneck as the higher resolution puts more work on the gpu. So instead of going for skylake i should be going for a much better haswell? i7 4790 or that xeon? will ddr3 still be good?

That Xeon is the best proposition if you don;t want to spend an arm and a leg. Fpor gaming, RAM type doesn't really mater. You'll be good for quite some time with this config.

just bear in mind that my motherboard does not support overclocking. i guess my options are either spend £230 on an xeon or sell my motherboard, processor and ram for about £150 and start new. What is the xeon e3-1231 performance like compared to more modern hardware?

The Xeon is competitive and will not be bottlenecking anything for quite some time. Not even two GTX 1070s.
Keep in mind though that you do not need an OCing MB to run the 4790k. It comes with high stock frequencies that it works on with any board.

thanks for the reply. so i guess it is down to either the xeon or the i7. as far as i know the i7 4790k is about 20% faster but it is £310 compared to £230 which is about 35% more expensive. what would you say i go for

ok i think i will probably go for the xeon. As long as there is no bottleneck then that is all i need. i am a bit strapped for cash and hopefully i can sell my i5 for say £80. thank you for all the help everyone

No worries about the Xeon, it'll do very well.
You're welcome!

I dont think you should get the xeon really.
The main problem with the i5 4430 would be the clock speed.
Actually the only (gaming) problem with the i5 4430 would be the clock speed.
the 4790k will help you there. The xeon not so much.
