I'm going to be upgrading to an SSD for video editing shortly. Will I still get the same speed benefits when transferring / rendering files if my OS is located on a separate SATA, or will I need to transfer the OS to the SSD? It's surprisingly hard to find an article or video with a simple answer.

Solution
Nothing surprising considering that OS on an SSD gets most benefits. OS and programs installed on it work much faster from it them from any HDD.
So depending on it's size you should install OS and your video editing SW on SSD as well as use it for scratch files which upon finishing a video you can transfer to a HDD for storage. HDD for better (for now) price per GB value.
