Just wondering how I'm sitting in terms of 4k gaming, any advice or opinions are welcomed. I bought this gaming pc from a guy on Craigslist and I've been learning as I go. With what I know I believe I have a pc capable of playing games in 4k resolution. As far as ram goes I do plan on upgrading to 32gb in time, I just can't decide whether I should upgrade ram or buy 4k monitor next paycheck....
Anyways here is what I have...

Gpu: Nvidia GTX 970 -I guess it's a reference card which I don't know what that means. That's what the guy I bought it from told me.

CPU: Intel i7 4790k @ 4.0GHZ

Memory: 8gb RAM

Operating system: Windows 10 pro

Power supply: Apevia 680w

Motherboard: Asrock z87m pro4

That's about all I know as for what's inside. I'm unsure about the cooling fans the previous owner put in.

That PSU looks iffy.

However, a 1080 is really the only viable option. It's not a 4k ultra card (titan xo gets closer but it's ridiculous money)

The 1080 will manage decent 4k medium/high depending on game and give 60fps.

The 970 isn't well suited due to its 3.5gb of fast vram and the faxt it does t really have the horsepower for aaa gaming past 1080, maybe 1440 in some titles.

You are on the low end of 4K gamming, you could play with reduced settings or high settings at lows 30fps more or less on more or less optimized current gen games (i.e. Fallout 4, BF4).

But in my oppinion that isn't a 4K system.

So you'd recommend upgrading my graphics card? Would a 980 ti be sufficient enough or would I need to look at purchasing a card from the new 10 series?

Depends on the money you have available and the expected quality that you want to run the games.
Currently a Gtx 1080 is on the fringe of maxed 4K gamming (and even for some games like GtaV drops to 30s) if you want to play at max at 4K probably the best option is a SLI of two 1070 but as i would normally dont recommend a SLI i would said that a Gtx 1080.

As the 980ti is a bit lower than the 1080 it would work nice if you drop some quality setting to get a bit more fps on some games that would be low 30s, because you are already on the endge of playable framerates if you still dont want to dial back anything i would stick to a 1080 for 4K.

The problem is that 4K gamming is veeery demaning.
