Does an average PC gamer need to shop for RAM?

Hey guys! I wanted to know if shopping for RAM is an important step in building a computer or not. I mean... after you have checked for everything that your RAM needs to have in order to be compatible with your system, will there be significant differences between the ends of the spectrum or it doesn't really matter? I'm asking this because apart from the capacity, i don't really know what differenciates RAM that could be used in a specific setup (that is, not comparing ddr2 with ddr4...)

Thanks!

Faster DRAM comes to play in some games (and more to come) also if you muti-task a lot or use DRAM centric apps or with large data sets. What mobo and CPU are you using/planning to use ?

All depends on what you want and what games you play or expect to play. Newer games look for more DRAM and are utilizing DRAM better so faster DRAM can play in - Fallout 4 is a good example of using faster DRAM

Another thing to think about is if you are going to OC, and might even want to OC the DRAM above and beyond. I generally look first to GSkill which is the DRAM leader and rather reasonably priced. If looking DDR4 I'd look at Ripjaws V and Trident Z - for DDR3 it more depends on what platform (AMD or Intel and individual CPU)

So are you saying that the difference between ram kits will be most noticable in the "overclockability" and in games that require more DRAM? If so, what are the basic guidelines to comparing different sticks of RAM? Also, what about general computer use like loading programs and stuff? Will there be any difference in such light tasks?
