Hi guys,

This is my first post on this site so I would like to say a big hello! I would just like a little advice from the pc gaming masters as I am not to sure if I have a problem or not.

Firstly before I explain the issue I will share with you my spec:

GPU: Nvidia GTX 1080 ZOTAC AMP! Extreme Editon
Processor: Intel i7 4790K oc to 4.5 ghz
CPU cooler: Coolermaster Hyper Evo 212
Mobo: Asus Z97A
SSD: Samsung evo 500gb
HDD: 2 older 500gb hard drives
Memory: 2 x 8gb sticks of Corsair Vengance 2133mhz
Display: 3 x Dell P series 23" monitors in an Nvidia surround set up.
Resoloution: 5760x1080

Right, yesterday I installed my new 1080 AMP! Extreme edition which I upgraded from 2 x SLI'd gtx 970's (EVGA ftw+ and an MSI twin frozer). On SLI I was getting quite low frames on some games as I refused to run the graphics on low or medium. I was getting 22-30 frames on ARK: Survival Evolved and about 28-30 frames on GTA V with relatively high settings. My perdiciment is that I bought the 1080 because it is suposed to be able to do 4k at 60 frames meaning it should easily be able to do my resoloution at 60 frames with max graphics however it does not. Max graphics on ARK gives me about 32 frames and max graphics on GTA V gives me about 30-35. In Nvidia inspector it shows the card using 99% load while gaming and the clock speeds boosting to what they are meant to (1900 odd mhz).

My question is, does this sound right to you? I thought the 1080 would trounce anything I threw at it but it seems to be struggling. Is the card playing up or am I just expecting too much from it? I bought it ready for Battlefield 1 as I wanted to play on max/high graphics in a Nvidia surround set up but I really dont want to have to scale the graphics back again. I'm not really seeing much of an improvement over twin 970's and considering the money I paid I expected a massive increase.

I look forward to some advice, thank you.

Dave

This is a bit tangent and totally not a direct answer to your question, but it's a very good read: http://www.pcgamer.com/what-optimization-really-means-in-games/

Now, trying to answer a bit broadly, you have to put those numbers into perspective. That 1080 still delivers a better experience from the 2 GTX970s you had before, using the same settings, so it is still an upgrade. Secondly, and using simple math (hopefully correctly, lol) 29FPS to 33FPS (avg), that is a ~12% increase. If you got the 2 GTX970s at ~USD$350 each and the 1080 at ~USD$650 then that is an increase in value no matter how you see it. Plus, you don't have to deal with dual GPU problems and the power requirements and heat they come with.

So, there's good things in...

So, there's good things in your 1080 purchase you might not be quantifying outside of those FPSes that might make you feel better. In my opinion, there's more to a card purchase than just FPSes, even if at the end of the day, they are the most important metric.

Cheers!

This video shows you relative performance to a 980 ti https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-ewNZP8ZCU, we all know that 2 970 are more powerfull then a 980 ti that would take them to a GTX 1080 level, as yuka said you no longer ahve problem with faulty sli profiles or bad optimized games you got only a strong single gpu. You can try to remove all drivers with display driver uninstaller (DDU) and install the latest drivers clean.

Might wanna get another 1080, or just play at 1080p or 1440p.
But honestly, you're expecting too much from 1080, especially two 970s. You'll be able to get your special 60fps just fine on all your games (probably at Max Settings) at 1080p or 1440p.

Perfect! Just the sort of feedback I was looking for thanks guys. As per my original post it looks like my expectations have been set a little too high. I may look into a second 1080 in the future but I need to recover from the impact the first 1080 has made on my bank account first! Thanks again!
