I did a clena install of windows 7 (iso from Nov 2015), windows update just hangs on 'checkign for updates'. I tried installign the newest version of windows update (sep 2016) that still hangs, I killed the service, tried to do the windows update trouble shooter (also hangs).

I thought Id bypass the whole things and do the windows 10 upgrade, that went well until it got to "checking for updates" then it too stalled. =(

No easy fix for this?

It's probably not stalled, depending on your hardware, the first update can take a very long time(many hours), just to figure out what you have and don't have and get the updates your system should install queued up. When you say hangs, what exactly does that mean?
I'll give you an example, I have an old laptop(4 thread, 2 core sandy bridge), that takes like 6 hours to update, when I run update, the one time of the year I use the laptop.

I let it it run for 24 hours, its stalled, besides windows 10 upgrade takes under an hour to do the checking that also stalled for 8 before i quite. Besides this is a fairly new version of windows 7, shouldn't be that many updates

In case you didn't know - windows 7 automatic update is broken for fresh installs.
Only way to fix it is by manually installing certain updates (how to do it is in the link in my previous post).

Alas didn't work (I had already installed the newest windows update, newer than the one in the convenience roll out). There is a tedious command lien fix on microsoft.com, kinda wanted to avoid all that =(

So, I manually installed a few Microsoft updates manually, IE 11, the 9/2016 version of Windows updater (all of these have to be offline version, anything that checks for installed updates fails). And it worked! retrieved 171 updates in 45min/

After that I did a factory reset on tow old laptop one an acer from, 2011 a compaq 2014. Same issue on both. Now I have to figure out what updates I installed to get it working, MS did something weird to windows 7 update in the past 9mo. very annoying.
