So I have Lenovo laptop and I'm planning to update its ram and buy a single 16gb so I could leave one empty slot for future 16 gb more, but until then shall I use current 4gb in one of them as its 2x4 right now or shall I just leave it empty ? Ive heard that mismatch might cause conflicts/drops in performance, so would be there any use of these extra 4gb? I'm 3D rendering heavy so the more ram the better. Thanks!

In this instance, I don't think you'll have an issue. However, more detailed answers can be provided if you had a few more specifics. Model of the Lenovo would be great.

Most of the time, I've seen Lenovo laptops work fine with 20GB of memory, using only 2 sticks. However, the mainboard supported the configuration and the amount of memory. I've seen others where the max supported was only 16GB, even if you put 2 sticks of 16GB in it.
