Hi there. I've had a WD My Passport Ultra 1TB for about a year and ha half now, and so far nothing has gone wrong with it. The other day I plugged it into my 2012 MacBook Pro as I was using it downstairs to upload some photos to a website, and when I disconnected it from the Mac it stopped working. I then plugged it back into my main PC upstairs which is a Packard Bell Desktop, and Windows wanted to scan it for errors. So I let Windows scan it for errors, and then it came back to me saying it could not fix the problem. I try it in a Windows laptop, and it did the same thing there. The weird thing is though, is that I can browse the disk for a few minutes, but as soon as I start to copy or paste anything to or from it, it then disconnects itself and I can no longer access it. I have used the WD SmartWare program to look for errors, but the 2 scans I did brought up no errors. What's wrong with it?

Hey there, @RR4Life!

I'm sorry to hear about your issues with the WD My Passport external drive. I'd suggest plugging it back to the Macbook and testing the HDD for defects from the Disk Utility there. If you are able to access the files there, make sure you backup all your important files there, until we have resolved the issue.
You mentioned running the QUICK and EXTENDED test, I assume (running the Data LifeGuard Diagnostics for Windows, right?). Can you please share the SMART data results from the extended one? While you are still on the Windows PC, check Disk management to see how the WD My Passport is recognized there. Sharing a screenshot would be really helpful.

Keep us posted & good...

I'd guess that it may have bad sectors in the file table causing it to go unstable. This is probably also why chkdsk failed to "repair" the volume. My Passport drives are notorious for going offline at the first sign of problems. It may seem annoying, but it usually protects the data from permanent loss when there are hardware issues or other problems.

If you've got some Linux experience you can try imaging the drive to another one using ddrescue. Just be careful that you don't clone data the wrong way. Otherwise, you'd probably be best off seeking professional recovery service.
