Today is the day that one of my external hard drive died. Now I only have 1 that I use to do backups on my Windows 10 OS. I also dual boot with Linux so I'm wondering since my external HD is 1TB if It would be safe to make 2 partitions of 500GB each and use 1 for windows backups and 1 for linux backups. What I tend to do is backup once a month and delete the previous backup with the clean one. So I don't think I'll even run out of space. I just want to know if it's possible to do and safe. I don't know why it wouldn't. I just want to save a few bucks by not buying a new hard drive hehe.

Oh and since I'm new on linux, should the disk be in NTFS or exFAT or something else?

Solution
can you do it? it all depends on your backup software
is it safe? definitely safer than riding a motorcycle with your eyes closed, but not as safe as using a NAS for example.
