What are some possible CPU upgrades for me?

I'm looking to get an upgrade for my PC and I'm not sure what would be compatible.
Any help would be appreciated.

What I'm using right now:
Windows 7 Home Prem. (If that matters)
AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 840 Processor (4 CPUs), ~3.2GHz
AMD Radeon R9 200 Series Graphic Card 4 GB
750 WATT Power Supply

What is your budget for the upgrade? You could upgrade to a Skylake i5 or i3 platform and you could upgrade your graphics card to a GTX 1060. If you were to only upgrade the graphics card to a GTX 1060 3GB, then your processor would bottleneck it, but it would still give you high performance and you could turn the most cpu intensive graphics options in games lower. If you were to only upgrade the processor, you would get more better frame rates right now but not as much as you would get with the current processor+GTX 1060.

One more thing, if this upgrade is not for gaming purposes, you could get an SSD like the Samsung 850 evo.

Absolutely, I wasn't sure what kind of specifics were needed.
Power Supply - CORSAIR RM Series RM750 750W ATX12V v2.31 (I believe, not 100% but it's RM 750 Corsair on the side)
Motherboard - Asus M5A88-M
Graphics - Sapphire Radeon R9 270X Video Card - 4GB GDDR5, PCI-Express 3.0 (x16), Overclocked - 11217-04-20G
