Hey Guys, My current specs are.

I7 - 2600 @3.4ghz
Asus P8Z68-V LX MOBO
PALIT GTX 970
Seasonic Gold 660W Psu

Im in the market for a new GPU to basically get everything back up to ultra ( My rig is starting to fall behind, Horizon 3, Fallout 4)

Im thinking 1070. Great price, i just want to know will i have to bring my cpu up with it, i know its a non k, but im happy to overclock it, i have a great heatsink on it to keep it cool if i chose to OC.

Thanks guys.

You are pretty much limited to a 4x increase on the turbo multiplyers, not worth trying to overclock the bclk, just causes instability on other parts on this platform. Shouldnt even need to adjust the voltage.
If turning down your graphics settings increases your framerate, then your video card is what's being pushed, not your CPU.

If that's the case, you're better off upgrading the video card than the CPU. While the 2600 will be a bottleneck for a 1070 in some cases, you'd still get better performance for the money than with a CPU upgrade.

BTW, you can get a 1070 for $350 on jet.com right now (select pay by debit, no free return shipping, and use the SHOP10 code). the Gigabyte OC and mini models are $353 after that, and the Zotac 1070 is $344.

My cpu seems to be doing fine, and i dont really want to be buying a cpu while keeping the same gpu, even if i dont get the most out of the 1070 i gather its still a better investment and will yeild better performance than just a cpu upgrade.

Thanks man

Yeah teh GPU definitely takes priority. but teh thing is, you shoudl only invest in a 1070 if you also intend to upgrade tthe CPU at some point the (near) future. Otherwise, a GTX 1060 6GB woudl be a smarter investment.

Would an i5 4690k be good?

It would be excellent, but will not work with your MB. And if you have to switch MB theres no point in getting older tech and not the latest skylake i5 6500 or 6600k, depending whether you wish to overclock..

Youve been a huge help mate, one last thing, could you send me some MOBO compatible CPUS that would be a good choice..

Thanksagain

This is my short term plan, then i will buy one of the CPUS mentioned, ive got a really good CPU cooler so i should be able to push it to its limit.

Thanks bro

A few things:

You have a GTX 970. If you are located in the US then please submit your claim for $30, in reference to the GTX 970 settlement. Palit is one of the AIC partners listed as a plaintiff:
https://www.gtx970settlement.com/Home.aspx

I approximate that your i7-2600 is equivalent to the processing power of an i5-6500, based on architecture, base and boost clocks.

If I were in your position, I would do the following:

Purchase the GTX 1070 and install in your Z68 / i7-2600 setup. See how the performance is.

Fallout 4 is definitely one of those titles that takes advantage of a current generation i7, therefore you would most likely see a appreciable improvement with upgrading to a i7-6700K. I love the idea of keeping the motherboard and upgrade to a i7-3770K, however I see those CPUs selling used on Ebay for $225 - $250. For that price, I'd rather upgrade to a new platform. Since your current one is 5 1/2+ years old, I'm assuming that you tend to keep CPUs for a while before upgrading. Nothing wrong with that.

If your current CPU performance is good after being paired-up with the GTX 1070, then perhaps wait for Intel's "tock" (Intel's tick-tick-tock cadence). kaby lake is a tick, and the processor that release one year later (Q4? 2017) will be the tock.

* submit GTX 970 claim.
* buy GTX 1070.
* buy future Intel 10nm chipset motherboard / CPU / memory (or Z170/200 series 14nm chipset components now).
* buy Windows OEM license from Kinguin for ~$25 - $30. Swapping motherboard may necessitate new Windows key.
! kaby lake possibly may require Windows 10 to be fully supported.

* sell GTX 970; sells on Ebay for $175 - $200.
* sell i7-2600; sells on Ebay for $125 - $150.
* sell motherboard; sells on Ebay for about $75.
* sell memory.

Upgrading the CPU alone is obviously a simpler solution. I'm just giving you my perspective.

No worries. With a overclock, your CPU should still push the 1070 just fine.

I personally am going to wait a bit longer until I upgrade my 2500k, still not seeing significant performance increases in gaming performance over my overclocked cpu.

Appreciate such a detailed post, and you have litrelly just made me £60 toward this new card i bought yesterday, I am from the UK, so i couldnt use the site, but after having a browse, i found that

Amazon Uk will give 20% refund no questions asked on my GTX 970, which works out around £60. Which is fantastic.;

My 1070 arrives tomorrow, im going to try it out, see what happens, and im definatly upgrading my cpu mobo in the future, Thanks for great advice, and man your a hero for letting me know about that.

I think the 1070 is wayy overpriced i need a new graphics card but the price between the 1060 and 1070 is a good £150 with £150 i could get two new SSD'S in Raid 0 and throw my 128Gb in the PS3 i wish the GTX 1070 was cheaper ( Sulk face )
Sorry am off topic the GTX 1070 is an increadible card shame its not RRP right now damn Nvidia :-/

I got mine for £380, not bad when you considering i can sell my gtx 970 and it makes it around £280.

i7 3770k if you wish to overclock(they do overclock very easily) or i7 3770 if you don't. I would consider anything below that a waste of money and would advise that you wait until you can get a new platform instead.
Worse case scenario: i5 3570k or i5 3570 with teh same logic as above, but, while they woudl drive your 1070 well, they are not a worthy upgrade against the 2600 you own.

i dont care much for this CPU now, i have the funds to buy another, i just dont want to leave it unused when i could overclock it and try and push it hard for the next couple of months,

Do you have any overclocking tips for the I7 2600 non k?
