Should I turn off the UPS once the PC is shut down, since it is not used? If I do it should I turn the switch in the back of the PC off and turn it on AFTER I turn on the UPS? What about the monitor?

Also a 650 / 360 (VA/Watts) for a PC with 265W and a monitor is sufficient correct?

Solution
You should leave it on. It keeps the battery topped up and conditioned theres really no reason to turn it off unless you really need it to be completely off.

360W is a little light, but if that 265W is the rating of the plugged in power supply, then it should using far less than that.

Keep in mind they are rated in output, and your UPS is also rated in output. But you need to worry about the input to your PC. So a good 80 plus supply is going to be worst case about 25% more as an input. So around 330W max (again the computer probably doesn't use that much)

I agree with Rogue Leader. There is no reason to turn off the UPS when the system shuts down. I leave my APC Back-UPS Pro 1500 on all the time even when the whole system is shut down. I do this for: 1. It keeps my battery at peak readiness for a power outage. 2. When such an event happens It powers my Modem/Router so I still have connectivity to the Internet. 3. And because it cuts power to certain devices like my monitors, speakers, desk fan ect. all the things that do not need to be plugged in when my PC is not on.

Will a 360W UPS be enough? That will depend on what you do with the PC when the power goes out. IF you plan on shutting the PC down as quick as you can then it may be enough. IF it is going to take 5-10 minutes to save your work and shut down then it will surely be pushing it. You also wont have a lot of time if you plug your Modem/router into it also. I get about 3.5 Hours with just my modem/router running on the battery and mines rated for 1500 VA and 865 Watts.

@Eximo @Rogue Leader
thank you for your answers, will keep everything in mind

@bgunner
I bought the UPS before my new computer so I miscalculated there but either way the UPS doesn't have a plug for the Modem. My major concern is that the monitor is also connected and that might make the W to not be enough.

If there's a power outage I'm only looking to save my work and shut down but either way them main reason I got the UPS is to protect the PC of the low voltage we get sometimes that might 'cos my PC to shut down 'cos its not enough to keep it powered on (old PC, the new one hasn't arrived yet, and I have no clue what the W the old one uses).

It kind of goes that if the PC tower is plugged into a UPS then the monitor will be because it just makes no sense to have a UPS then when you cant see to shut things down.

Everything will depend on the wattage your new equipment requires on if your current UPS will be enough.

Not all UPS's will condition the power output. This means that if the voltage drops to (lets say for an example) 99v, in the US, not all power supplies will kick in and run off the battery to stop the low voltage from getting to the tower. some are more sensitive than others to this and will prevent the low power from getting to the PC. My particular one will kick in around 88v or if over 144v. This is conditioning the power flow. Hope you knew this \when you purchased your UPS.

Thnx guys, as far as the wattage goes I'll have to wait and see I guess. My main thing is to actually get passed the humming of power going to the ups that annoyed me to no end trying to sleep, since I can't turn the darn thing off....

The UPS should not be making noise, especially not a hum. Maybe sometimes when its charging or under load the inverters or transformers may hum or if there is a draw some of them have fans, but a hum all the time is not good.

What is the brand and model?

Seriously the noise is barely there. Like how the television, when its turned off but not unplug, makes that really low sound. Can't really explain it.
The UPS is an Eaton 5E650iDIN. I didn't really splurge (got if for 56€) 'cos I needed the money for the new monitor and PC

Hmm. EATON isn't necessarily bad quality. But yeah its probably a bit of transformer hum, maybe your ears are very sensitive. Ok no big deal then.

When it comes to sleep yeap they are. I can hear a clock tic-tocking a mile away. I go hunting at 2am bleary eyed for it in the house to remove its battery... anyway thank you guys for all the info, I'll pick a solution now and have this resolved
