Harddrive says its at 100%, not sure what to do to check what is causing it.

I know a good amount on CPU's and GPU'S, but storage is my weak area. In my current PC I have a Western Digital Green 1tb Harddrive. Recently my computer has started to be slow when doing a fair amount of things (thought it was normal) but now it seems to be a lot slower. I was trying to Upload a video using Hitfilms and it was taking a long time for Hitfilms to respond. Looking at my computer usage, it said my CPU was at 16%, ram 50%, and the Harddrive was at 100%. Is this normal? Once the harddrive got back to 80% (with nothing else besides Hitfilms and browser ACTIVELY doing anything) hitfilms ran smoothly again. Any help on trying to figure out what is causing this?

I also have some external harddrives if those would make things work faster.
Not sure about age of harddrive as well.

Since that was a long read, Ill just sum it up
Need help figuring out why harddrive was at 100% when nothing too insane was happening.

First, green drives are slow. If your OS and movie program were trying to use the (green/slow) drive at the same time that explains your slowdown. The task manager at 100% for the drive confirms this. What you need is a second drive for hitfilms to use all alone. This way when Hitfilms is working you can be doing something else and not have the slowdown.

Sorry that you are facing some issues with your WD drive. :(

I believe that just backing up the important data stored on the drive may be a good start.

As you were not facing those issues previously, then there's a chance that the drive is failing. So, you can just run both short and extended DLG tests on it: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=lWK1lz

What is your OS? What seems to be using the drive, when you are in Resource Monitor?

I would agree with 4745454b. WD Green may not be the best pick for an OS drive.

My OS is the latest version of Windows 10. Today when I checked and it was at 100%, the only thing that was using the disk was Steam at 33 mb/s. I can't really afford a new harddrive right now, is there anyway I can use an external harddrive and get the same result? Or is there a fix to this issue? Thanks!
