The only software you need to install it is the SES driver, but even without that you should still be able to use the drive for file transfers as the Microsoft mass storage driver (the essential driver required for hard drive recognition) is built in to Windows and installed by default via plug & play.
However, without the SES driver, Windows keeps nagging you about a "missing driver" so installing it removes that annoyance.
