Hi, I've been using my WD My Passport Ultra for 2 years now and it was doing great until this week when I opened its Properties, checked the two options: 'Comtress this drive ..' and 'Allow files on this drives ..' I found out that there was/is only one folder missing or hidden. I tried to apply your advised of adding the 'unhidden.bat' file, but I got the 'Access Denied' popup. Yes, I am the owner of this portable drive. Please help. Thank you very much in advance , Nath.

The recycle bin folder is a system file and hidden, but it would not go to the recycle bin unless you deleted it yourself.

Deleting the original no longer makes the copy a "backup" but the original. You want two places for files to be at for backups, if it's just in one location you are just moving it around and it does nothing for you if...
I don't recommend using compression, it just adds another layer of something that can go wrong and damage the data.

Did you turn on "show hidden files" in Windows Explorer options? Need some more details here, how do you know there is a missing folder and when did it become missing? Are you sure you did not accidentally drag it to another folder or delete it?

Hi hang-the-9,

Thank you so much for your reply.

Call it an unintended action for I still dont understand why I checked the two options in its Properties. Anyway, I know for sure that the one folder is missing because I regularly store backup files from my laptop there. It vanished from the Windows File Explore after I checked and then hit the apply button. Later on I unchecked the two mentioned options and then rechecked them. While it was processing, I still could see the one folder being compressed .. So I know it is still there.
I search for solutions in here, and came across the advise of creating the 'unhidden.bat' file, but without success. As said the pop up window reads as follows:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe
F:\>attrib -s -j -r /s /d
Access denied - F:\$RECYCLE.BIN\s-1-5-21-2688832777-4076841077 - 3896288795 - 1000

I presume that the folder is now in the recycle bin of the WD My Passport Ultra and that I cannot retreat it?

It should not have just deleted from applying indexing and compression. Unless there was something special with that folder or drive, like it was encrypted or somehow protected and it did something funny with the file structure. Did you wait for the compression to finish before you started doing things with the drive? Messing with file functions mid-way is not a good idea, it can cause issues. If you start compression, encryption, conversion of something, let it get to 100% before changing anything on the drive, or even using it.

You can try running a file restore utility like Recuva and see if it picks up anything.

The good thing is that you just have backups on there, so you still have the originals correct?

When it was processing, I got panicked for I knew I shouldnt run it from the start, so I stopped it mid-way. Yes I did, twice! :-(
Unfortunately as soon as I backed up the files on the DW portable drive, I removed the original ones on my laptop. So no, I dont have the original files anymore.
What about the recycle bin of the DW portable drive? I cant see it on the windows file explore.

Deleting the original no longer makes the copy a "backup" but the original. You want two places for files to be at for backups, if it's just in one location you are just moving it around and it does nothing for you if something happens to the drive the files are on.
