Hello,

I got an aurora r3, i7 2600k (4,1 oc), 8gb ram, 875 supply I was thinking bout selling this pc and get a i5 6500. Will it be worth? Or my current setup can handle the gtx 1070?

Edit: I can also buy a better cooler and OC the cpu more, so yeh what would be wise xD

Yes, the GTX 1070 should work, assuming it has two 6 pin PCIe connectors. I assume it does because you already have a GTX 970 in it, but I can't find detailed specs of that power supply to confirm.

As for the option of swapping out the power supply in the future, I'm not sure that you can. I found a few message board posts from individuals stating that the pinout on that power supply in a Dell Precision T5400 is non-standard. Is this is true, it would mean that a T5400 isn't compatible with a standard ATX power supplies; pins in motherboard cable have different layout. I do not know if this is the same issue for the Aurora R3. They appear to use the same power supply.

I would recommend that you...
No reason to upgrade the CPU. It may be "old" on paper, but is still among top performers for gaming. And it certainly won't bottleneck even a 1080, let alone 1070.

What graphics card are you using now and what PSU model exactly? PSU might need an upgrade if it is, say, 5-6 years old and from unreputable manufacturer.

MSI gtx 970
PSU: Just the one I got with the desktop in 2011 (dell) 875 watt. What do you recommend for me, PSU?

Dell h875e-00

+Mikey86 What is the Dell service tag listed on the top-front of the case? It should be a black label with white lettering, and have 7 alphanumeric characters.

Disregard: I forgot that you already stated that it's an aurora r3. I became confused because Dell owns Alienware and there are many similarities. Your power supply suggested that you had a T5400, yet you had a non Xeon CPU, which is why I requested the service code. Then I remembered that you initially stated aurora r3. Please excuse me and my lack-of-coffee brain.

Buy the GTX 1070. Check what type of PCIe power connectors your power supply has, and how. My Dell Precision 5810 came with two 6 pin PCIe connectors. So when I connected a MSI GTX 970 4G Gaming GPU, I had to use the included 8 pin-to-6 pin adapter that accompanied the graphics card.

I am a little bit confused now, so my power supply should be ok? Or get a new one? As for a cpu cooler what is a good one for a socket 1155 which fits in my aurora r3?

So many questions :)

I would recommend that you purchase the GTX 1070 from a site that has a no hassle return policy (e.g. Amazon, NewEgg, etc). If you ever decide to upgrade the power supply, then I suggest that you search YouTube for people who've done it, and ask them if they needed a ATX converter cable to install a new power supply. And if so, where precisely did they obtain it from, would be the question you should pose to them in the comments.

As for the power supply, last time I thought the psu was broken so I bought a standard new one 600 watt to test the psu fitted and worked but in the end it was my cpu that gave problems needed to clean and paste it and returned the psu.

thnx for your help!

Looks like I'm a little late but just wanted to say I also have an aurora r3 with an ASUS DUAL-GTX1070-8G and I and using the 6+2 pin from the 875watt PSU. So it works but I had to do a little modification to the case for the GPU to fit. The big latch that covers the GPU didn't close all the way so you can either take it out completely or do what I did and just notch out the plastic where the latch meets the card itself. Now this could just be specific to the ASUS 1070 but its just a heads up.

That setup is great. I can hold 144fps for my monitor easy and my OC is 4.4 with the liquid cooler it came with.

Yeh I just tried 4.3 with the alienware liquid cooler. CPU fan on 60% and with intelburn test 14 times standard I got max 70 temp.

For my gtx 970 I use some lego blocks from my son to hold it. What are you using? To make it stable?
