Hi

I bought the i7 4970 and just finished the installation using the stock cooler. I found a post saying the stock cooler is sufficient for this cpu.
When I stress the cpu, it reaches up to 93°C. For stresstesting I used prime95 version 2.66.
There are multiple questions on the forum about the i7 4790K, but not about the 4790 (or at least not that I could find)

Are these temperatures safe? I measured these temps using Open Hardware Monitor.

Those temps are pretty high. The stock cooler is basically bare necessities, especially for an i7. Prime loads are much more strenuous than typical usage in programs even when they push a cpu to 100%. What are your max temps when the cpu is under load during normal programs, editing video, gaming or whatever tasks you perform?

It's not at the throttling temp yet but still hotter than I'd run a cpu on a regular basis. If you're using it for long periods, a few hours at a time encoding video and gaming and the cpu reaches into the 80's C I'd consider an aftermarket cooler. Cooler efficiency depends on a few things, case airflow, ambient room temps. For 'normal' use which usually consists of the cpu idling on and off or fluctuating at loads of 20-50% use, ambient room temps of around 22c and good case airflow the stock cooler should be enough.

If you're gaming for 2-3hrs solid and all 4 cores are maxed most of the time and the room temps are around 28c-30c then the stock cooler will probably struggle.

In a stress test with the stock cooler 93°C is not a abnormal value however stress tests are very extreme and your CPU while gaming will never be reach this temperature or load. If your temps while gaming still reach 70°C or more i would say buy an aftermarket cooler. even a cheap one will be better than the stock cooler from intel.

thanks for the responses, I can't tell how high the temperatures will be after using the cpu for a while, but when I do I'll come back and respond.
I removed the thermal paste and remounted the fan to eliminate the possibility that I used too much thermal paste.

At the moment it is sitting at about 35°C with chrome being the only active program.
I haven't tried any games yet because of the fear that I might damage the cpu (very unlikely, but still :D)

When I gathered more temperaturs throughout the day, I'll come back and respond

After playing about 5 minutes of cities skyline it gets up to 88°C.
It's a really CPU-heavy game but it shouldn't have this much problems with it. With myprevious i5 I never heard the fan spinning at 100%, but now even after 5 minutes with my i7 I can hear it ramping up. When checking Open Hardwar Monitor it is spinning at 100%

Processor usage was about 60-70%
Is this a problem with wrong amount of thermal paste or should I go ahead and buy a different cooler?
