Should I upgrade?

Sorry for another one of these, but I think it's about time I start looking to upgrade! My build right now is a
i5-2500k
asus pbp67 mobo
8gb ram
gtx 960

If I were to upgrade to a skylake style that I have been reading about is staying in the i5 a good idea? 6500k or 6600k?

I would probably keep my video card for awhile too until I could afford something worthwhile

Oops. I meant the 6500. Ha ha. I imagine from the article it says the 6600k would be worth the nominal difference in fee? what's a good amount of ram now a days? 16gb?

8gb is enough, 16gb is a better value if you can afford it.
but the difference is sooo low like 1fps.

and if the 6600k is worth it? maybe you will need an aftermarket cooler too.
i suggest you watching some digital foundry benchmark videos on youtube to get a clear image .

Ah I've never used an AF cooler before. Do the new CPU's run pretty hot? Are coolers fairly expensive? I'll look at some of these videos!

Have you overclocked the 2500k yet? Is it holding you back in games? If not, no reason to upgrade yet - that's still a VERY capable CPU with a good overclock.

If you want to max out details in games and/or hold 60 FPS, a new graphics card (1060?) would be a bigger upgrade than the minimal difference you'd get from going to Skylake.

Primary reason you need an after market cooler with the 6600K is that Intel doesn't include one with the CPU. They figured out that people who buy unlocked CPUs are probably going to overclock which means they would buy an aftermarket cooler anyhow.

It's not necessarily I suppose! I have been playing some wow and feel like the load times are a bit more taxing then they used to be.. but maybe that's the need for a SSD? More ram?

The articles did say that the 6600k would be a decent upgrade from my processor though! I haven't OC'd anything though I don't really know how haha.

Not much sense in buying a Z board + K CPU if you're not going to OC it.

There are several guides out there for OC'ing for beginners. Since you've already got a K CPU, give it a shot - there's performance still in there that you aren't using yet!

Maybe I will look into OCing this beast and perhaps a bigger SSD so I could actually fit more than just windows (my build is from 2011) should carry me a ways still?
