Hey, everyone!

I was about to buy a new desktop to use for basic personal use and a bit of MMO gaming, but I'm also considering building my own.

My question is, should I buy a pre-built machine, use an old PC I have, or just start over?

On a previous post I asked if it was worth upgrading my existing Dell XPS 710 H2C. Pretty much everyone said to scrap it and start over.

That said, would it be worth at least using the case, fans, or anything else inside it and building form there?

My budget is $1,000-$1,250. I already have a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers.

This site has pretty much all the details of my machine: http://hothardware.com/reviews/dell-xps-710-h2c-performance-gaming-system?page=1

Here are the current specs:

- Intel Core2 Extreme processor QX6700 (3.20GHz,Overclocked) w/Dual Core Technology and 8MB cache
- 4GB DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz
- Dual 768MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800GTX
- Serial ATA2 RAID 1 With Dual 500GB Hard Drives
- No Floppy Drive
- Vista
- 16X DVD-ROM and 16X DVD+/-RW
- X-Fi PCI Sound Card
- Ageia PhysX Processor
- Dozer Chassis
- Motherboard 7-slot BTX
- 750-watt Power Supply
- Copper Heat Sink
- Two 120mm x 38mm front fans

Let me know what you think. Thanks in advance!

There are some benefit with a different amount of ram but more than 8GB doesnt make much different at all. And yes, i7 does better in performance but, well, not too much. An i5 is a good choice for price/performance, and probably the best picks for nowadays mainstream gaming.

Yes some of them garbages, but some of them not.
You can use some old parts like HDD, Optical Drive, and Fans, as long as it is still funcional and healthy as well. Some of them is just a garbage that you shouldnt and cant use them anymore like the BTX Case, DDR2 RAM, etc.

Those components still overpowered for basic home use and some MMO gaming, you can also apply some of your old parts to this new rig for sure, but not all of them ofc.

Thanks, MCID47.

Will the amount of memory make much of a difference? What about the i5 processor, would there be any benefit to going with an i7 for gaming? Also, do you think any of the components in XPS tower I already have are absolute garbage, or what I can consider reusing? I'm going to start ordering parts this week, so I'm trying to compile a list.
