Currently I have:

I5-4460
ASRock H97M Anniversary LGA 1150 Intel H97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
EVGA GeForce GTX FTW w/ACX 2.0
Silicon Power Slim S60 2.5" 240GB SATA III SSD
Samsung EVO 850 2.5" 128 GB SATA III SSD
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB 240-Pin DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
BenQ GW2765HT Black 27" IPS 4ms (GTG) WQHD LCD/LED Monitor, 350 cd/m2 DCR 20,000,000:1 (1000:1)
CORSAIR CX series CX750 750W 80 PLUS BRONZE Haswell Ready ATX12V & EPS12V Power Supply

I am looking at buying a 1080, specifically an EVGA SC version. I'm not going to upgrade from 1440p (my current) for probably years and year.s My goal is to run absolutely maxed out settings on most everything at 60+ fps at 1440.

Here's where I would love your input. My google searches so far indicate that it's not likely the i5-4460 will bottleneck the 1080. Probably.

So, what do you think?

Will the i5-4460 bottleneck the 1080 significantly? If not now, how long till I'll need to go to skylake or kaby lake?

I think the 1080 is better future proofing than the 1070, despite seeing most benches around 60+ at 1440 or higher for the 1070. Am I insane to spend the extra 200$ for the 20-30 fps + average, and to ensure I don't buy another card for a while?

I've been reading a lot of articles about how RAM speeds are starting to make some fps differences in gaming. After 6 months or a year, do you see me happy with my setup, or buying a new mobo + skylake + 2000+ mhz Ram sticks?

So, buy the 1080 and sit pretty? Or am I going to be hamstrung by my i5 and current setup?

Solution
your CPU is good enough for 60FPS with any game for now. probably will last a year or two more.
as for the 1080 ... I wouldn't do it for 60Hz monitor. The 1070 will be able to do those 60FPS in most games maxed out. And it's 200$
Get the 1070 now, sell it in a couple of years and get newer part that will be way faster than 1080 - and you still spent same money as single 1080.

So you're really happy with your 1070? I guess the reason I ask, is because my cards roll 'downhill' : When I upgrade, my wife gets my old card. So I won't be selling the 1070 if I get it, i'll upgrade, and she'll get the 1070. (Right now I have a 970 ftw, and she's got my old 770). So, by the time I get to selling what comes out of her computer, it's not worth much. \

Do you run at 1440p?

the 1070 will get you 60+ FPS in every game in 1440p. I'm even using it on a 144Hz/1440p monitor. perfect card for it.

honestly the 1080 is not a good fit for anything at the moment... too much for 1440p and not enough for 4K. overpriced as hell.

Even Ark at Epic??

My family member's comp struggles to maintain 70 fps at full settings at 1080. I know it's a garbage game....but all the same I play it.

I don't play Ark, is it even the final version?
you should look for the benchmarks online so you can have an idea what to expect.

It's early access, and very poorly optimized. Getting 60 fps is a huge challenge . If you don't feel like the 4460 will significantly bottleneck the 1080 for the next year , I'm really leaning towards it , for not only ark but just to give myself the best future proofing possible for the next 2-3 years . Without paying Titan on sli setup prices that is .

well, at the moment the 4460 is still pretty good, but I'm not sure how it will be in 2-3 years. remember CPUs haven't changed much in years but that may change with the introduction on Zen from AMD. we'll see how that goes.

Noted. I went with the more future proof solution in that case, since i'm not going to take too much of a hit from running it with a 4460: and now that the card has arrived firestrike benchmarks are supporting that choice.

I appreciate you chiming in on this.

i actually have an i5-4460 and a gtx 1080 with a 1440p monitor. it works great in most games, but in a few the cpu will bottleneck the gpu. it's not usually much of a problem though.
