Hi. I'm fairly new to this site and building a computer in general. I'm looking to buy either the Gigabyte GA Z170 HD3 or the GA Z170x UD5.

Could anyone give me some help on the pros and cons between the two? I've read the specs in detail but like I said, I'm new to this and could use some help translating to layman'S terms. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi CTurbo,
Thanks for the reply. Sorry about the typo but you're correct. I meant to say the HD3. As other parts, I haven't bought anything but I think I am going to buy the following: core i7 6700k, crucial ballistic sport lt 64 gb ram (might end up with 32gb), corsair h60 cooler, Samsung 850 evo 250 gb (or 500 gb), corsair rm 550 psu, and a corsaid carbide 400 r case. I think I'm going to hold off on a graphics card for now but eventually get something like evg gtx 950 or maybe something a bit lighter as I don't do a lot of gaming or video editing or anything.

Does this help provide more background? Thanks again

What is the general purpose of this PC? This sounds like a very very expensive PC for somebody that doesn't do a lot of gaming or editing.

Overclocking would get you absolutely nothing. Even 16GB RAM would be useless, much less 32GB. Sounds like a LOT of wasted money to be honest.

Hey CTurbo,

I don't do a lot of video editing or a lot of gaming but I'm a statistician/data scientist. I analyze huge data sets on the order of 20 gb to 180+ gb. Currently I have a a MacBook Pro with 16 gb of ram. I easily push the limits on this machine a few times a week. So while I'm open to suggestions, I'm pretty sure about the ram and the CPU.

All that being said, I'm pretty new at building my own machine so interested to hear your insight. Also, I'm not super familiar with overclocking. But given my use case, do you still think it wouldn't be helpful?

Thanks for your help!

Ok well it sounds like you would benefit from the extra power of an i7 then. That's good.

Small changes I would make would be to get a decent sir cooler instead of that AIO water cooler.

I wouldn't get a regular Corsair RM psu. The RMx or RMi are good, but not the regular RM.

Oh great! This is super helpful. Any S uggestions on air cooler? And going back to MBs, would you recommend the HD3, UD3, or UD5? (after doing more research, I think I can get by with the UD3 over the UD5 but anxious to hear any thoughts/recommendations you might have)

Thanks again!
