Hi everyone, looking for some troubleshooting assistance with an audio problem I am having.

I just put together a new gaming PC:

Intel 7600k CPU
Asus Z170-A Motherboard
EVGA 1080 GTX FTW
GSkill DDR4 3200
EVGA 850 watt Nova PSU
Windows 10 Home OS
NZXT S340 Elite Case

Everything has been working absolutely fine with the PC except for the audio. When I plug headphones into the front audio jack of my case, I get bad audio. Music plays but it sounds slightly distorted and the sound is almost wavy. It just makes the music sound crappy.

I checked the front audio connector cables that are attached to the motherboard and the connection seems fine. I even tried plugging in the connection multiple times, but still have the same issue.

Now when I plug the headphones into my monitor, Asus PG279Q, there is no audio issue. The audio is crystal clear and sounds normal. So I thought it had to do with a crappy front audio connector BUT I plugged the headphones into the back of the motherboard (I think it's the IO section of the board). The light green hole to be exact and got the same exact problem, crappy audio with a distorted and wavy sound.

I have updated my drivers and have also tried setting the audio from HD to the other setting (forget what it's called in the BIOS) and the problem still persisted.

WhAt is causing this issue? Is it a faulty motherboard? I'm not sure why the audio works perfectly fine on the monitor plug in, but plugging directly into the motherboard or the front panel audio jack is absolutely terrible.

Any guidance would be appreciated! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Solution
Literally having the same problem with the same motherboard. It's hard to describe the distortion. I even ordered a separate sound card and that only changed the sound of the distortion. It's now much wavier than crackly. This motherboard is a POS in my opinion and will be getting an MSI

Christian_90, I found the fix!!! Was literally about to send my motherboard back and decided to mess with settings one last time. In the Realtek audio interface, or whatever the audio interface is called, there's an option set for surround sound. Once I turned this off it 100% fix the issue. It's a default setting that makes headphones sound wavy and weird! Please try this and let me know if you have any issues.

With the sound card I have now, it is a different interface. "xonar DGX audio center". Within that, I don't see a surround sound option. Before I installed the sound card, I'm pretty sure the surround sound box was unchecked. I may have a different issue going on

if you got the same problem with a DAC then it's not the board in your case. but either some weird interference, bad headphones or bad settings.

For all we have audio problems (click a pops) whit Asus Z170-a when CPU load is high, try this:
go to BIOS / AI Tweaker / AI Overclock, change XMP to Auto and all options under this to Auto also.

This fix all audio problems for me when high CPU or GPU loads.
