E4400 for League of Legends

Solution

Yeah, you're right. That's a shame.
I've been having a hunt for you, but it's not straightforward. That motherboard you have is standard mATX, so you might be able to pick up a second hand CPU+Mobo combo on the cheap and swap it in, but that would probably require a new windows license, plus you'd need to be quite specific for a DDR2 mATX mobo, unless you're prepared to get new RAM too.
Once you get to that level of complexity & cost, you may as well just pick up a whole second hand build... but that's money you might...
It's a super light game, but that's right on the minimum specs. You'll likely be fine in the early game but I don't know what might happen in super-intensive fights.

Depending on your motherboard you can probably drop in a higher tier CPU for just a few dollars. Here, for example, is an e6850 on ebay (US) for $8:
That'd have a much better chance of holding things together.

Do make sure you check compatibility with your motherboard though. Post here if you're not sure.

Such a good deal, but my motherboard can only support up to the E4400. :(

Do you have the 750ti already? Or is that what you're trying to decide on purchasing? If you've got it, try it and see how you go. It might be okay. I honestly can't say for sure.

I already have the 750 ti so I might as well as try out and buy the E4400 like you said. Thanks a lot though.

^ This isn't strictly true. A modern mobile i3 or Pentium will have higher clocks and a significant performance per clock advantage. I'd expect something like a mobile Pentium G4405u to be roughly twice as fast.

The only way to know how well the E4400 will do is to try it out, but I wouldn't have high expectations for a 10 year old CPU, even in a relatively light game. It'll run, certainly.

Ah, I suppose so, I forgot that mobile i3s nowadays have hyperthreading! :)
I think a twice as fast is a bit of an exaggeration, a haswell mobile i3 like a 4030u for example would probably be about 45% faster on average.
Doesn't really matter though, should run LoL fine on medium settings. :)

The gains are exactly as big as I'd think. Here's comparing the older Haswell Pentium to the slightly newer Core2Duo E6850.

Performance per clock is around twice as high between these two, and would be larger between a Skylake Pentium and E4xxx.

EDIT: But yes, as long as it runs the game. I'm curious to see what OP reports back.

I second that. Will you report back and let us know how you go OP? Also, make sure you get up to a couple of intensive late game team fights before drawing your conclusions. The CPU load is likely to be much, much higher in those crazy moments than it is when not much is happening.
