Hey guys ,

Just wondering out of curiosity, I know an office area giving away free e8400 systems and after looking at one of the systems i realised i couldn't find a product id, so i'm wondering just by inspecting the motherboard is it possible to tell if it supports an lga 775 intel quad core?

Thanks Guys,

Incidentally, I haven't yet seen a Lenovo, HP or Dell desktop that can't overclock a Q6600 to 3.0GHz with the usual 266-333 BSEL pad mod.

This is true even if the Q6600 is such a poor overclocker that it will not run at that speed at stock voltage in overclocker friendly boards like ASUS, MSI or Gigabyte so I can only conclude the el cheapo ECS boards in those OEM machines do some overvolting all of the time, perhaps to make up for terrible three-phase voltage regulation. I put all my crappiest quads into them 6-7 years ago and they still work great, and Q6600s are now only $15.

Obviously the motherboard will at least need a G31 chipset to know what 333 FSB is. And a stock cooler seems to keep temperatures below 70c.

Owner of a C2Q 6600, paired with a MSI P35 Platinum Combo mobo, the cpu easily overclocks from 2.4GHz stock to 3.2 on air-cooling, 75C.

So they stripped off anything that would help identify the type of system, like the service tags Dell uses in lieu of serial numbers? Seems a bit harsh on their part.

Open the case up & see if there's any sort of model # or serial # listed on the motherboard. With most of the OEMs, a quick search by manufacturer & model number will bring up a support page that at least links to the user manual, if not a list of CPUs that it will support.

Thanx for the quick responce guys, just another question,
Does anyone have any experiencing overclocking on OEM boards like dell/HP?
And also just wondering i'm thinking of grabbing a cheap xeon like this: http://bit.ly/2dmXhRQ ,
So just wondering Are the older xeons like the newer ones in which they are locked?
And are the older xeons supported on an OEM boards?

Thanks for all the quick responces guys
