GTX 1060 Problem (VGA only monitor)

I just got the Gigabyte 1060 and i noticed it doesn't support VGA, whereas my monitor doesn't support anything else. I have a classic DVI-D dual link to VGA adapter, but i read that the card only supports digital signal and that i would have to pick up a digital to analog converter for it to work.

I tried running it with the one i have, but all i got was a black screen with my monitor behaving as it would if the computer was on sleep. The problem here is that it might be because of some driver or bios issues, so i cannot know what the culprit is for sure.

Is there anyone that can tell me if i actually need a converter instead of the regular adapter that i have?

Solution
It would help if you linked to the exact GTX 1060 you have, but if it doesn't have a DVI-I output port, there is no analog (VGA) signal available from the card. You would indeed need to purchase a digital to analog converter... and hope the picture isn't degraded too bad. This one has been used by another poster on this forum with reported good results. (I can't vouch for it, however. Never used one)

DVI-D is pure digital. DVI-I is both digital and analog. http://i.stack.imgur.com/6K4tr.png

I've looked at pics of Gigabyte 1060s and they seem to be all digital only for DVI, so yeah, you're probably going to have to get a digital to analog converter. VGA is a dead standard now, and as you can see now GPU vendors are dropping analog support entirely. You may want to consider getting a new monitor sometime in the near future.

Just as i thought. Very good input guys. I was surprised to see my monitor only had a VGA port, as i had bought it in 2014. Thank you very much and i will be looking for a new monitor very soon.

That's probably the best route to go. Analog video is less sharp, less bright than digital (all else being equal).

DVI-D > VGA adapters don't really work with good graphic cards for the last 4-5 years. I had a VGA Only monitor and managed to blow it's backlight in the matter of months. DVI-I (Single link) used to work OKish from what I can remember, but DVI-D with VGA-Only monitor won't ever work. Tried diverse software, 3 adapters (2 supplied with new GPUs and one expensive store-bought) -> nope.

You already spent 300$ on a GPU, so I would recommend spending another 150$ on a monitor (I got a BenQ RL2455hm, but check some reviews as there may be a newer model in the same price category now). After you get it, sell the VGA for as much as you can and live with it, you won't be able to fix your issue with your current hardware setup, sorry.
