I'm just wondering if it's at all possible to have a decent gaming build for less than $150 if I already have a GPU (Radeon r9 270x).

Otherwise I've been looking to buy used PC's (possibly new) that are modable and just throwing my GPU in.

No. 200 is teh bare min worth getting. But you either have a bad PSU and can;t use it reagrdless or you have a good one and you can put it in a refurb, no?

150$ is just not enough. I tried a cheap built with almost all cheapest parts. I generally wouldn't recommend all those parts, but your budget dictates this. I just could build one for 180$ and its not a real gaming machine with that cpu.

Would it be possibly to just find a decent i5 and a compatible MOBO plus say 8GB of RAM, and I could use my current GPU, PSU, CASE and HD?

(All of those refurbished i5's probably have terrible stock PSUs)

Yeah, but prebuilts for $150 will have like 230w-300ws at most.
And probably lack any PCIE connectors.
