I am running Windows 7 64 - Home Premium. I recently got a new internal drive(August), new install. When I installed Win764, I used option to "install updates later", which now I suspect was a mistake. Anyway, I have never been able to get updates since the new install- never can complete the search for updates.

SO I used a recommended fix- used Microsoft fixit, selecting repair windows update. That did not work- I installed KB3020369 and KB3172605 as per the following-

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-update/windows-7-update-solution/f39a65fa-9d10-42e7-9bc0-7f5096b36d0c

Now my windows update setting are permanently set to automatic updates and they are greyed out so I cannot change back to "when I decide to".

I have the "some settings are managed by your organization" alert. My only account on my machine IS an admin account.

As I have Home Premium I cannot access gpedit.msc- it is not there. Also I cannot use Local Group Policy Editor for same reason, it is not available in Win7 Home Prem.

Given all of that- is it better for me to simply re-install a full install of windows and make sure to select a different setting for updates? OR,

Is this a function of new windows 10 "always updating" features, ie, I cannot choose when to update if I ever install current updates? OR something else? Thanks in advance.

Solution
The message "some settings are managed by your organization" means that your laptop is part of a domain and certain things, like Windows Update, are controlled by a server; most likely WSUS in this case.

If your laptop is on a domain then you need to speak to your IT department.
