This device was working, then received a message yesterday, advising to copy data to another device as we could not edit, etc. By the time we had the new device, it has been invisible, although tried different usb cords, which were sometimes shown in Disk Utility and other times not there. We don't want to lose the data - what is the solution? Thanks.

Hello again, @Gooeystewy!

I'm sorry to hear about this then. However, do you hear the WD My Passport spin up when using different USB cables? What about swapping between 2.0 USB & 3.0 USB cables? You mentioned that you have already tried using several different Mac OS computers, but were they with different OS X versions? If you have access to a Windows computer, you could also try connecting the HDD there just to see if it will power up properly. If all the Mac computers you have used are laptops, you should definitely check how it would appear on an iMac.

If you need to retrieve the data so badly, I'd strongly recommend you consider contacting a professional data recovery partner who would assist you with this. You...
Welcome to the TH community, @Gooeystewy!

I'm sorry to hear about your issues with the WD My Passport external drive on your Macbook. I'd strongly recommend checking Disk Utility again and try to test the drive for defects from there . I'd also recommend checking if plugging it into a different USB port on the laptop would do any difference. If you have access to another Mac OS X computer, check how the external HDD would get recognized there.
As soon as you can access the drive's contents, make sure you back them up immediately!

Keep me posted with the troubleshooting!

We have tried all the options described including trying two other Mac computers and we cannot find the data. The disk utility is not available as the computer can't see it. This WD is still in warranty but we need to find out how to retrieve the data for copying.

If you need to retrieve the data so badly, I'd strongly recommend you consider contacting a professional data recovery partner who would assist you with this. You should still be able to RMA your WD My Passport afterwards, as long as the Data recovery service you use provides you with written verification, on its company letterhead, that it has performed data recovery or other services on your hard drive.
