I'm trying to help a friend recover data from her WD Passport, external HDD (wd800u017-004). She doesn't remember dropping it or doing anything that may have damaged it.

When I plug it into my computer, I can hear it spinning up, and it installs driver software, but I cannot see it in the file explorer. When I view it in Disk Management, it comes up with a message saying 'you must initialise the disk before Logical Disk Manager can access it' and then shows the disk as unknown and not initialised (see image here).

When I right click on it and select properties here, under the General tab it says 'this device is working properly', but under the Events tab, it says 'device not migrated', with the following message:

Device USBSTOR\Disk&Ven_WD&Prod_\6&65fc65f&0&________________________&0 could not be migrated.

Last Device Instance Id: USBSTOR\Disk&Ven_Multiple&Prod_Card__Reader&Rev_1.00\058F63666485&0
Class Guid: {4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Location Path:
Migration Rank: 0xF000FC000000F130
Present: false
Status: 0xC0000719

I'm using Windows 10 but have also tried it on a machine running Vista and one running Ububtu, all with similar results. I have checked the cable with another portable HDD and it's working fine.

She is not so interested with getting the disk functional again, but has data on there which is not backed up anywhere else and really needs it.

I have searched around for different solutions but nothing yet has worked. I have tried accessing it with Recuva and TestDisk/PhotoRec, but the drive does not show up on either of them. With Find and Mount, I am able to see the drive, but it says it has a size of 0KB and I am not able to access it.

Many thanks for any help you can suggest!

Hi there samjohnc,

That is really unpleasant.
Taking into account all the troubleshooting you've performed, I believe you will need to look for some professional help, in order to retrieve the data. You can check WD's Data Recovery Partners out: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=S96pAZ

It seems that the drive can't be accessed by software tools. Furthermore, it shows up as having 0 KB of capacity, which could be an indication of a failed drive.

Let me know in case you have some more questions,
D_Know_WD :)

Thanks for your quick reply, D_Know_WD, it's helpful to know that may be the case.

I'm still keen to hear if any others have suggestions of things to try, otherwise it may be a case of calling the professionals...
