Hi
I am trying to boot the windows xp installation from a usb. Made the usb bootable with Rufus by I am getting the error A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart.
The OS installed on my Compaq Evo is AntiX Linux and I want to delete it and reinstall windows xp again

Solution
ext3 is definitely not supported by Windows, however I don't think this should play any role when you're trying to install the OS from scratch. Basically the installation media should be able to recognize the drive and you should be able to reformat it and select the partition you want to install Windows to. You could follow this tutorial on how to perform a clean installation of Win XP: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/978307
Hey there, polywin.

Backup your important data (if you have any at all) and test the drive for errors, just to make sure that there's nothing alarming going on. This might prove helpful: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/37659/the-beginners-guide-to-linux-disk-utilities/.
You could also try installing Windows after you connect the HDD to a different SATA port with different SATA cables, to see if the same thing happens.
Another reason for this to happen could be an issue with the installation media. Take a look at this link: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/windows-usb-dvd-download-tool, it could prove useful, but please note the requirements for Windows XP.

Hope that helps.

thanks I'll give it a try
Isn't this problem related to the different HDD filesystems (ext3 linux and ntfs windows)?
