Hey just looking for any help I can get...
So my computer crashed after what I think may have been overheating and for awhile when I turned it on it would turn off immediately and the restart in an endless loop. After a few months I decided to clean out all the dust and now it turns on for about 30 seconds and turns off, no restart. I am trying to narrow down what the issue is so I can try to replace just the busted hardware not the entire computer. There is no display and no sound when turned on. All the fans work including the gpu fan and the LEDs on the case work. My specs are:

CPU: intel i5 2500k
GPU: ati radeon 6870hd sapphire
Mobo: Gigabyte z68ap-d3
PSU: Corsair CX600
1TB HDD (came from an old HP pavilion)
INWIN dragon rider case

I build the computer about 4 years ago and it was running well, I brought it to my first two years of college and it crashed near the end of the last semester I was there. I can definitely say I believe not cleaning the dust attributed to this problem. The other thing is that my heatsink isnt fastened all the way on anymore and the thermal paste is dry but this was after I took it off months after the crash. Any and all help is appreciated. Thank you

Solution
All the things working are connected directly to the PSU. They arent sourcing power from your board. You could have a MB/CPU fault, but try resetting your CMOS first. And dry thermal paste and a badly attached heatsink will cause problems lol. You need to get that fixed or it'll never work.

I reset the CMOS after cleaning it the other day and now it'll power on for about 1-2 minutes before shutting down. It definitely seems like the mobo/processor are at fault. I have an old processor on an old mobo from an HP pavilion, do you think if I get a heatsink and thermal paste I could swap them and see if the cpu was the problem? I'm not sure if this will cause a problem so I don't want to do it without an OK from someone who knows what they're talking about lol.

It depends whether the CPU is compatible with the motherboard socket. The 2500k uses LGA1155. If the Pavilion's CPU is also 1155 then yes, otherwise no. Do you know the model of the CPU in it? It may be that you just need to re-apply the thermal paste and attach the cooler properly as long as the cooler actually fits your board, which I assume it does if it worked in the past. You shouldn't power on your system without some kind of cooling device or you are going to fry your CPU though.
