Can you have additional hard drives on a computer without putting them in the RAID array? example a storage server has a Raid 5 configuration I would like to add a single HDD to the computer without putting it in the array. Can this be done?

Solution
Yes, in fact most servers don't actually boot off of RAID 5 but rather have a single drive, or perhaps a pair of drives in a mirror set to boot from.

The easiest way to do this is to just connect the extra drive directly to the motherboard SATA ports rather than to the RAID controller. However even most RAID controllers will allow you to configure a single drive to act independently.

Yes, just install and connect it. Go to properties in either Windows 7 under My Computer or under This PC in windows 10, you new drive should be right there with a drive letter assigned. If you want tips on getting the best use from it copy & paste the following into your search engine without the quote marks " Sean's Windows 7 Install & Optimization Guide for SSDs & HDDs " This simple guide will show you how to install programs or just create storage folders on the new HD. You might already be experienced with this stuff but the read will not be wasted and might contain something new to you.
