Can an Intel i3 6100 be sufficient for a mid gaming build?

I'm planning on building a mid gaming rig on a budget and this is my list so far:

CPU: Intel i3 6100 skylake
MOBO: MSI B150M Mortar
RAM: Kingston HyperX 4gb x 2
HDRIVE: WD 1TB Blue
PSU: Corsair CX500
CASE: Techware RAIDEN ELITE

And future upgrades are:
GPU: MSI RX 470 or 480
CPU COOLER: Corsair H55

Thank you in advance

Yes the i3 6100 is pretty strong for gaming. Avoid that psu though as it's not very good. There is a newer version of it that is much better. It's the CX550.

Also, there is NO reason to buy a fancy cpu cooler with those parts.

Thanks for the recommendation. Though the store I'm planning to get all the parts from doesn't have that model(They have discounts for buying several parts). They only have the CX550M but I guess having a modular PSU can have it's advantages.

Also, I just wanted to buy the cpu cooler for the looks and not for overclocking since the 6100 is not unlocked and the B150M doesnt support overclocking.

Yeah, I know. But it looks way cooler than the stock. I really hate the design of Intel's stock cpu cooler.

Put the money spent towards a i5 and just use the stock cooler.

In a low-mid budget build there are a couple things you avoid... Overspending on a cooling solution which could just upgrade you to the next tier is one of those things along with others such as storage/case. The money on the H55 as above could be put towards an i5, could be put towards a better GPU (which is where I'd put it personally), towards a boot drive, towards a better motherboard that would support overclocking on a potential future upgrade to a 6600k, etc.

It's your money, so it's essentially up to you to determine how to spend it, but there's no reason to get something because "it looks way cooler" on a lower end build. That ends up being wasted money. If you really dislike the look of their coolers, then go look for a better looking air cooler. Which will still end up netting you at "wasted money" on an i3, but it'll be $30-40 cheaper than an H55.

I agree. It's like trying to pimp out ricer cars like Civics, Corollas and etc. For the price you'd spend on tweaking the performance and looks, you could buy a Mustang (or even possibly a Corvette) instead.

WOW. I have never thought about it that way. I'm really glad that I posted my question here. There are a lot of people who can help out.

Do you have any recommendation for the motherboard? I chose the MSI Mortar because all the reviews says that it's a great board for a mid gaming rig. Do you think the MSI z150m mortar would fit the job? I'd like to keep the cost of the motherboard under $100 or $120 max.
