Moving up to 1440p, CPU help!

So at the the moment I have an AMD FX-8350 coupled with a GTX 1080 (I got the GPU first as I've had my heart set on it!). I was wondering what CPU would be a good match for the 1080 and would be good for the 1440p that I'm going for? I was looking at the i7-6700k just because I'm that sort of overkill person, but I'm trying to save a bit on this side of the build, so any suggestions would be appreciated!

You could go with an i5 6600k and see very little, if any, change in performance.

Yes, a well clocked 6600k does smash a fx8xxx in games that use a few cores. Even heavily threaded ones will get a boost. Enough benchmarks out there, just search game + 6600k to ssd

most i5-6600K OC to at least 4.5Ghz. that will provide the best gaming experiences ATM (no different than an i7-6700K) HT is really not used in games ATM. if you care for 1-2 FPS difference then you can go ahead and spend the extra $100 on that.
