Hi. I hope to purchase the Asus Z170 PRO GAMING Motherboard Asus Z170 PRO GAMING Motherboard for a new build in a few months. I just have a few questions about this mobo.

1. Does this come with a Q-connector?

2. How does the FAN_EXT work? I could only find some really confusing posts about it.

3. What is the lighting that's in the overview?

4. Does the M.2 support NVME drives?

5. Is the only difference between this and the Aura version RGB lighting?

6. How good/easy is the BIOS?

Solution
1. Doesn't look like it comes with a Q-connector. However, I find that these look rather ugly in a system where cable management is necessary to maintain cleanliness. I'm really OCD about cable management...

2. It's a connector for a device that was abandoned. They were going to come up with some sort of fan card or whatever. The pinout is different than that of a 3-pin or 4-pin fan connector... Please, for the sake of your fans, don't try to plug any fans into it. Although I think it's a different shape than regular fan connectors anyway, you probably can't put a fan into it.

3. It is four LEDs that can be set to still (always on), or breathing (gently pulsating). I imaging it's either controlled via BIOS or a software provided on...

4. Yes, the M.2 slot supports NVMe drives. For these mainstream boards, I usually recommend using M.2-2280 drives like the Samsung 950 PRO series or the SM951 series.

5. Basically.

6. Very well organized, easy to understand if you read the manual. I just skimmed it a minute ago and I think it's rather easy to understand. BIOS should be very stable, I mean it's Asus.

I personally recommend this board.

By the way... You said "A couple of questions", but you asked six questions. I'm not trying to nit pick, just saying.

I still remember the time when my instructor asked me for a couple screws for the desk he was assembling. I knew that he needed four, but I only gave him two. When he asked where the other two were, I told him that he only asked for a couple. I know, I'm lucky he's a cool guy, any of the other instructors probably would have lectured me for that.

What was so bad about the FAN_EXT?

I don't really think there's anything bad about it. It was only sold with the premium X99 boards and can't be bought separately. I'm not sure why this board has a connector for it.

If you get the fan card thingy, you can plug your fans into that. You should not try to plug fans directly into the FAN_EXT connector.

Sometimes you find people online selling these cards because they bought X99 boards and didn't have a use for the card. I wouldn't value it above $10 though.
