I have a set of earbuds with a mic in them and they have a single plug. My laptop has a single combined headphones/mic jack, so no problems there, but I can't get my laptop to use the mic in my earbuds. My laptop is a Dell XPS so does this have something to do with the Dell Audio Manager? How do I get my laptop to use the mic in my earbuds?

I found me a pair of earbuds to try out and came out with a weird result. First of all I don't have a port that does all of them like yourself. I plugged it in the audio port and everything would work just had to select it in the menu. Then I plugged it in the mic port and here is where things got weird. It has an external mic about 4 inches down with a volume control switch but it didn't work but noticed the volume was going up when I yelled into it. Come to find out the left speaker was working as a mic which is very weird. Maybe this is happening with you? Just that since your laptop port is an all in one that the speaker is the mic but since sound is coming out you can't use it. Might just need a headset or a USB mic.

Not sure how the Dell Audio Manager works but try going to your speaker icon in the task bar, right-click press "recording devices" now see if your port the earbuds are in is there and make it default. If it isn't there right-click the empty part of the screen and select "show disabled devices" and see if the port might be disabled. Try the other option too for disconnected devices. It might not be detecting the mic on the earbuds.

I tried doing what you said, but nothing came up. I think you might be right about it not detecting the mic.
