Radeon and Nvidia card competition question.

I am considering rebuilding my gaming PC next summer. My current PC uses an ASUS GTX 970 card. I am considering Radeon as a possible replacement card choice if I rebuild my computer. However, I am not as familiar with Radeon's classes of GPUs. What class of Radeon cards are in competition with Nvidia's GTX 1070 and 1080? I would like to know which class of Radeon cards I should compare with to Nvidia's GTX cards. Thanks in advance.

That's roughly how they currently shake out, with the RX-480 being near the R9-390. So there's nothing really competing with the GTX1070 or higher. The Fury X comes closest but it only has 4GB of VRAM, and is missing features the newer Polaris (RX-400 series) has.

(The R9-295x2 is a dual-GPU card. You should avoid multiple GPU setups if possible. Too many issues)

For a high-end GPU you should get 8GB of VRAM.
Hey,
Next summer is a long way away in the GPU world.

All things being roughly equal I recommend NVidia.

The newer AMD cards tend to do worse with older games but should gain vs NVidia's current GPU's in future games (and some current) mainly with DX12 and Vulkan.

The RX-490 may be on your short list but again almost a YEAR away is a long time.
